Internet Terminology

More than most areas of life, except possibly medicine and law, technology related communications are full of an unprecedented number of acronyms, jargon, and terminology that is generally impenetrable to uninitiated outsiders.

However, being basically orderly folks, and fundamentally oriented towards automated solutions to organizational problems, workers in the field have also generated a number of dictionaries and guides to help with the problem, some of which are referenced below:

  • Jargon File. One of the earliest collections of technology terminology, first published in 1975.
  • RFC’s. Request For Comments documents covering Internet related terminology are listed below:
    • RFC 1983; Internet Users’ Glossary; G. Malkin; 18 August 1996.
    • RFC 3536; Terminology Used in Internationalization in the IETF Group; P. Hoffman; May 2003.
